On September 5, 2017 Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the end of President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The DACA program allowed children brought to the U.S. without a visa by their parents protection from deportation for a two-year period along with a work authorization card.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will provide a limited, six-month window during which it will consider certain requests for DACA and applications for work authorization, under specific circumstances.
All current DACA applications pending with DHS will be adjudicated and if approved should be valid for the full two-year period. Additionally, current DACA beneficiaries with benefits expiring between September 5, 2017 and March 5, 2018 will be eligible to file for a two-year renewal of their DACA deportation protection and work authorization document, but must submit their applications before October 5, 2017.
Please feel free to contact our office to schedule a consultation to discuss how the phase out of DACA will impact your current immigration situation or if you wish to file for a renewal of your DACA before October 5, 2017.
