Removal proceedings (formerly called deportation proceedings) are administrative court proceedings in which foreign nationals are charged by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with being removable from or inadmissible to the United States.<\/p>\n
An individual in removal proceedings (the \u201crespondent\u201d) has the right to an attorney, but does not have the right to a court appointed attorney because removal proceedings are not criminal proceedings.
